ABSTRACT

To form a complete grammatical sentence, one needs two elements: a verb and a subject:

Erik werkt. Erik works (is working).

Other elements can be added: adverbs of time, a place, objects, prepositional phrases. Note the stability of the subject-verb position in the examples:

Erik werkt hard. Erik works hard. Erik werkt op zaterdag hard. Erik works hard on Saturday. Erik werkt op zaterdag in de tuin. Erik works in the garden on

Saturday. Erik werkt op zaterdag met Sanne Erik works in the garden with in de tuin. Sanne on Saturday.
