ABSTRACT

The teacher education articles, editorials, and letters have wondered, questioned, warned, and made predictions about the influence of Trump’s election on teacher education. P. Freire writes, “When the teacher is seen as a political person, then the political nature of education requires that the teacher either serve whoever is in power or present options to those in power”. This chapter looks at how university administration supported the program’s revision within a framework of “chutzpah” and “humility” as humanistic responses to sweeping political trends. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book. The book aims to start the conversation about how the election and the consequences of the election can be addressed in the teacher education classroom. It describes examples of how a diverse group of educators are creating classrooms that support students to act with empathy, historical knowledge, and critical consciousness in this political moment. The book presents thought-provoking recommendations for teacher educators.
