ABSTRACT

Leaders lead and children learn, it’s a simple as that. This recasting of a statement by a previous HMCI may be seen by some as self-evident and, for some, an accurate rendering of schools as we have known them. However, the times they are a-changing and the connections between leadership and learning are becoming increasingly difficult to capture in a simple aphorism. The richness and complexity of learning is matched by the multi-layered, often elusive quality of leadership, so that teasing out their interrelationship is not for the faint-of-heart. This book is about making the connections and about one particular endeavour: to define a relationship that would make sense to people in different parts of the world, in widely differing school cultures and in widely differing social contexts.
