ABSTRACT

There are currently around 850,000 people in the UK who are living with dementia, and thus there is a huge need for appropriate post-diagnostic support. While there is often support available to help people to deal with the practical and financial problems that dementia causes, all too often the emotional aspects of support are not addressed. For many people, a safe, supportive course with an experienced facilitator can provide an opportunity to meet other people who are going through the same things as they are and take away some of the fear about dementia. The groups also provide a chance for people to learn from and to help each other. Providing emotional support can often help people to talk more openly about their illness - and thus to adjust to their condition and find ways of coping with it. The chapter also sets out some of the evidence base for the course.
