ABSTRACT

This chapter looks more closely at how differences of access are spatialized in the United States, Canada and Mexico. In 2005 87 percent of US counties had no abortion provider, with 97 percent of counties in non-metropolitan areas having no provider. Women below the federal poverty level now have over 40 percent of all abortions, with black and Hispanic women constituting the greatest percentage of the women having these abortions. Clinic violence is probably the single greatest factor for the decline in abortion providers. In recent correspondence with Medical Students for Choice (MSFC), it was mentioned that there are recommended women's health competencies issued by the Association of Professors of Obstetrics and Gynecology (APGO) but as of yet there are no formal detailed requirements concentrating on family planning. Telemedicine offers a way to challenge the restrictive legislative systems in place across specific regions of the country.
