ABSTRACT

In this chapter and chapter 8 we go beyond thinking about local history bounded by its physical territory, and consider the links of a local area with first the national and then the global aspects of history. We start here by looking at the relationship between the national and the local. We look at the potential of local history to provide history content and encourage the use of the reader’s own personal and family history as a resource for history. The use of story in the teaching and learning of primary history is discussed and ideas for classroom practice given. Starting points are suggested for linking into wider geographical perspectives.
