ABSTRACT

The name for the state of Arizona originated from an area south and west of Nogales that the Papago Indians called Arizonac, meaning "the place of little springs." Many Spaniards moved there, and their mining camp named Real de Arizona became well known. In 1978, Arizona had about 2.5 million citizens, small in comparison to Italy's 50 million and the 35 million of the Philippines. Arizona is noted for the many types of environment within its bounds. In general, the higher the elevation the cooler and damper the climate will be, and in Arizona the altitude varies from about 125 ft. above sea level, along the Colorado River below Yuma, to 12,633 ft., at the highest point in the San Francisco Mountains. Arizona is also interesting when examined through time. Arizona can also be characterized as a very dynamic state. The state of Arizona is a dynamic and fascinating place, because of its history and its diversity of environment.
