ABSTRACT
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides an overview of the current models and theories on human performance and human behaviour in traffic that are relevant for all those involved in designing safe road systems. It provides an overview of the main theories and models of driver behaviour and performance and their implications for road design. The book deals with the question how to design environments that do not induce a high workload for users. It focuses on characteristics of individual information carriers. The book describes the way people perceive and collect relevant information from the environment and shows some implications for designing road systems. It describes the main principles of Self-Explaining Roads (SERs) and gives a few good practice examples.
