In this introduction to the collection of critical essays, Heidari considers some of the ways that the local color movement anticipated modernism as well as the qualities of King’s work which merit its consideration in such discussion. The essay examines selections from King’s journals and letters as views into hver journey toward a modernist aesthetic—what she describes in one passage as “the continual voyage I made.”
