ABSTRACT

Are we really nothing but a certain physical structure—in other words, a configuration of molecules? Yes, because we have ample reason to believe that the fundamental physical theories are complete with respect to the special sciences. There is not the slightest indication that there are non-physical forces in the world, such as an élan vital or an entelechie. Against the background of the completeness of physics, there is a strong causal argument leading to the conclusion that everything that is causally efficacious in the world is identical with something physical.
