ABSTRACT

The paper reviews current management systems used in Polish mining industry. It also discusses the possibilities and directions of their modernization. Mining industry, due to ownership structure, the size and importance to Polish economy, history and social environment is one of the industries most difficult to adapt to market economy. Major part of the industry is still state owned. Nevertheless, Polish mining companies have undergone major changes. Most companies vigorously pursue restructuring in order to be profitable. Some examples of successful implementation of modern management concepts and techniques are given and the obstacles that hinder this process are discussed.
