ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses Indigenous education for authentic intercultural education beyond the dualistic frame of Indigenous vs. non-Indigenous culture. It articulates that meta-cultural understanding is about what makes us to see cultural diversity in a particular way, not what we see it. The book presents a critical review of some Indigenous cultural concepts such as Dreaming, Deities, Land-links, and Kinship in the contexts of dualistic education and to articulate relevant pedagogical values and strategies. It argues how to conceptualise the multiplicity of cultural world-views and proposes relative otherings of cultural representations to understand how each culture is perceived by and represented in other cultures. The book focuses on a non-dualistic sense of cultural inclusivity and pedagogical alliances. It proposes holistic contemplative pedagogy by allying Indigenous interconnectedness and interrelatedness with Buddhist mindfulness pedagogy.
