ABSTRACT

The world of food looks very different today than it did at the beginning of the century, let alone at the beginning of the millennium. Perhaps, however, the appropriate comparison is with the concerns of the nineteenth century, when, inspired by the dire predictions of Malthusianism, even the prospects of what is now the developed world seemed to be doomed to an inadequate supply of food to feed the mounting population. Whilst it remains true that a substantial minority of the world’s population is inadequately fed, agricultural productivity has outstripped population growth. There is enough food to feed the world.
