ABSTRACT
This chapter is an introduction to the second part of this book. For migrants crossing the Mediterranean, summer is the "season of death" as milder weather and a somewhat calmer sea results in more craft setting off, many of which are unseaworthy and full to the brim with human cargo attempting the voyage to Sicily, Malta or Greece. Illustrating how devastating the human cost of crossing the Mediterranean can be, the month of April 2015 was one of the most deadly. Many of the humanitarian disasters are recorded on video camera and broadcast to global publics. In Italy news coverage of migrants focused on the Italian Coast Guard's interception of small crafts loaded with people. Amid the migration crisis in May 2016, the first World Humanitarian Summit was convened in Istanbul bringing together aid organizations from across the globe.
