This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. Part six of the book discusses case studies covering a number of geographical areas including the Horn of Africa, the Philippines, the Arab Gulf, Northern Iraq and Syria, and Latin America. It examines the author's experiences in Tigray and Ethiopia, and the Horn of Africa, and addresses the recurrence of famine as a humanitarian disaster. The book then argues that progressive trade unions and their allies should be involved in responses to natural disasters. It also examines the antecedents to the ethnic and cultural genocide that have been inflicted upon Chaldean and Assyrian Christians and Yazidis among others in Northern Iraq and Syria. The book offers a close examination of UNICEF's communication and media strategies, as well as behind-the-scenes advocacy and in-person contact under difficult physical conditions and terrain.
