This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of Part eight of this book. The part of the book presents theoretical, practical, and ethical perspectives on the uses of new communications technologies in humanitarian affairs and crisis situations. It examines the uses of Twitter, Facebook, cell phones, data platforms, and drone technology to understand the importance of new digital formats and their impact on information and imagery. The book also seeks to understand the role of online community activism. It then examines a lone-wolf terror attack—the 2013 public daytime murder of a British Army Soldier in Woolwich, London—and the role of eyewitness imagery and its use in the news media. The book then analyzes the message content, construction, and dissemination of alt-right themes—misogyny, racism, white supremacy, xenophobia, fear of immigrants, and "white genocide"—employed in the campaign discourses of Donald J. Trump, and outlines how they propelled him into the White House.
