ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part explores the notion of affect and emotion in heritage sites in a variety of ways. It examines the notion of the war trophy and difficult histories. The part shows how the mind and body worked. It suggests a complete separation between emotions and thinking. The part also suggests that affect 'refers to an amorphous, diffuse and bodily "experience" of stimulation impinging upon and altering the body's physiology, whereas emotions are the various structured, qualified, and recognizable experiential stages of anger, joy and sadness'. It examines the novel as a way of deconstructing Spain's uneasy relationship with its Moorish past. Novels, theatre, the arts in general are all means by which national heritage can be expressed. Fictitious and imaginative narratives and characters offer emotional engagements with the nation state.
