ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts covered in this book. The book provides some ideas, strategies and techniques which can be integrated into day-to-day work. It is aimed at all types of support workers, healthcare assistants, social workers, occupational therapists, youth workers, employment officers, tutors, counsellors, coaches and managers. In fact, it will be useful to staff working across a wide variety of environments, such as residential homes, day centres and education, as well as nursing and probation. Many of the front-line staff working in these environments have limited opportunities to go on courses to learn techniques which will support them in their day-to-day work motivating service users to participate in activities, arousing their interest in making changes or altering unacceptable behaviour. There are many ways in which additional knowledge can be gained, and the basic ideas presented here can be built on and incorporated into daily work routines.
