ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book seeks to illuminate the ongoing journey, highlighting both the nature of transition points through the student lifecycle and the ways in which practitioners can use these to more purposefully challenge students' thinking, and enable them to develop as autonomous, reflective learners ready for the twenty-first century. It addresses transition thematically rather than chronologically, enabling them to introduce pedagogic theory and related practice that could, in most cases, be transferable to different levels and subject disciplines. The book provides the underpinning theory of transition within the context of contemporary higher education. It focuses on specific pedagogy related to each chapter's theme, with practical suggestions for meeting students' needs. The book also provides a range of 'off-the-shelf' case studies that lead they through tried-and-tested learning activities step by step.
