ABSTRACT
This chapter presents the rationale for a new approach to the practices of community and economic development that builds a bridge between them. Historic trends toward increased inequality and the relative failure of conventional approaches used in community and economic development are described. An alternative approach that is based on systems thinking, engages market forces, and understands poverty as a function of isolation (not income) is described. The six principles of the WealthWorks framework are introduced.
