ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides a snapshot of the ethnic media landscape around the globe by emphasizing changes and continuities within the sector. It discusses continuities between the pre-digital era and current time, including challenges ethnic media face as they participate in an increasingly global media industry. The book also discusses how British Broadcasting Corporation’s multicultural marketing is geared toward serving the growing South Asian population, specifically the younger generation. It highlights some of the new opportunities that have become possible in the digital age, as well as some of the analog-era challenges that persist. The book describes the advocacy role of the publication for British Muslims, especially for young British Muslims who were feeling alienated amid the series of terrorist attacks in Britain and negative social attitudes associated with Islam.
