ABSTRACT

The field of curriculum history and the study of the emergence of school subjects has grown rapidly in recent years. In the early chapters we have looked at some of the reasons for the growth of this field of study and we hope captured some of the excitement and potential of the work being undertaken. But the rapid development of the field does pose problems for a text seeking to summarize and introduce work on the historical emergence of school subjects. For new scholars approaching the study of specific subjects there is no adequate bibliography or summary of the wide range of work that has been completed and is currently underway.
