ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about Manuele Teofilo who is a Samoan living with cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy impairs Teofilo physically, restricting movement from below his neck. This requires the use of an electric wheelchair and means that it must rely on others for basic needs. The staff at Carlson School filled his life with joy and excitement. School taught him many things, but ultimately it taught him to have a positive attitude. Self-confidence grew within him through a mixture of academic learning, physiotherapy sessions, and other therapies and activities. Living with his disability has taught him several lessons about life. The cerebral palsy it lives with is a restraining factor of his living, but it has learnt to pursue and fight to get the best of life. Humans create structures purposed for community and a sense of belonging. Ironically, many of these structures prevent genuine belonging due to various factors.
