ABSTRACT

This whole study of the personnel occupation and its members is based on the ‘social action’ frame of reference, an approach which I see as necessary for a successful sociology of work and employment – a sociology which will do justice to both the free-will and rationality of human beings and to the constraints and exigencies of social structures. The possibilities of such an approach have been indicated, with reference to the entry of individuals into the personnel occupation, in the previous chapter. The intention is, now, to apply further the model which has been developed above but still, for the present, primarily at the level of the individual experience.
