ABSTRACT

Copy the set of pictures (Handout 10) so that you have one set for each pair of students.

You might want to start with a brief brainstorm about what jobs the class thinks exist in the community and which they think is most important, to model the process. Then give out one set of pictures to each pair. Ask them to rank the pictures in diamond formation, i.e.:

using the criteria of ‘most important to the community’. The picture of the worker who is considered most important to the community is placed at the top of the diamond, then the next two are equal second. The three across the centre are next equal and so on. The one at the foot is considered least important. When the pairs have completed their task they form into groups of six and each pair explains and seeks to justify its ranking to the other two pairs. The six then negotiate a consensus ranking for the whole group.
