ABSTRACT

In South Africa, there is limited research to illustrate the effects that Non-motorized transport (NMT) facilities are having on safety and usage. This chapter summarizes this research conducted at the University of Cape Town, which used case study areas to determine the effects of NMT facilities. It presents an investigation that was conducted into whether improved NMT facilities reduced fatalities and injuries of NMT users. The chapter provides a comparison of the volume of NMT trips in the study areas from 2003 to 2013 was conducted, in order to determine whether there had been an increase of NMT trips in the areas that have had upgrade. It assessed to determine how successful these implementations were, based on the recommendations presented in the new NMT Facility Guidelines. The chapter focuses to investigate NMT facilities in South Africa to explore the effects that implementing adequate NMT facilities will have on NMT and NMT users.
