ABSTRACT

Povidone iodine (typical brand "Betadine") is superior, not only in its bactericidal effect but also in its fast-acting properties. As a result, it is the principal disinfectant widely used in mouthwash, for sterilization of hands and fingers, and as an antiseptic for wounds. It is used widely in the clinical setting, from sterilization of wounds and washing of hands by doctors and nurses before starting surgery to sterilization during childbirth. It is also used in the common household, for gargling, in breath fresheners, handwashes, and to sterilize wounds, impetigo, or boils. Povidone iodine is water soluble, binding iodine to its carrier povidone. Iodine is effective on most molds and bacteria, as well as on various viruses such as influenza and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Iodine is an essential microdose element for the living body and is indispensable for the life and growth of humans and animals. The human body contains approximately 20–30 mg of iodine.
