ABSTRACT

This chapter sheds new light on the link between the media and Islam, focusing on the coverage of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) by Al Jazeera Arabic as one topical and recent example. In July 2013, a military coup, with apparent popular support, overthrew the MBs Mohammed Morsi, who, together with other MB leaders, were put in jail and prosecuted. Egyptian media outlets linked to Islamists were shut down, as were all Al Jazeeras offices, and its journalists were banned entry into Egypt. According to the BBC News, about 20 reporters from Al Jazeera Mubashir Masr and Al Jazeera English were arrested and charged with joining or aiding a terrorist organization the MB. Gulf News reported that some members of Al Jazeera Mubashir Masr resigned over biased coverage. More recently, Sultan Al-Qassemi criticized Al Jazeera Arabic and its relationship with the MB, and argued that Al Jazeeras love affair with the MB was evident from the very beginning.
