ABSTRACT

The new post-confrontational period in the development of international relations opens greater opportunities for the United Nations (UN) to realize in full measure its potential, forged by decades of the cold war, hostility and ideological rhetorics. In the context of the growing trend towards democratization of international relations the UN is being transformed into a forum of peaceful relations between states in conformity with the fundamental principles laid down in its Charter. The purpose of convening peoples’ assemblies on a regular basis lies seemingly in effecting priority to the problems of maintaining international security in all its dimensions. Its vital tasks could be: an expression of public opinion on issues considered by the UN main organs; elaboration of recommendations on specific questions for the UN relevant bodies and monitoring implementation of UN decisions.
