ABSTRACT
This sect was founded in Japan A.D. 653 by the monk Dōshō, on his return from China, where he had been taught by the celebrated pilgrim Hiouen-Thsang, who himself had brought the doctrine back from India. Another Japanese priest called Genbō preached the same teaching about the year 712. This doctrine was thus transmitted through two different lines.
