ABSTRACT

James McCormick’s first foray into general practice was as an assistant in Leicestershire, from 1954 to 1955. However, in 1955, he moved to Greystones, County Wicklow, a small seaside town on the east coast of Ireland south of Dublin, where he practised as a full-time general practitioner. In the 1960s, McCormick became involved with the College, later the Royal College of General Practitioner (RCGP). The RCGP is arranged around regional faculties within the United Kingdom and Ireland. McCormick’s interest in medical education started early, setting up Ireland’s first general practice student attachment scheme in 1967. In July 1973, McCormick was elected to professor in the Department of Social Medicine at Trinity College Dublin, later becoming the Department of Community Health in 1977. Alongside his academic work, McCormick was actively involved in Trust, a charitable body that provides health and social service to homeless people. McCormick developed an important relationship with Professor Petr Skrabanek in the 1980s.
