ABSTRACT

Many of the contributors in this volume hold different implicit definitions of technological development. For some, the essential aspect of technological development is that the productive sector of the country should achieve competitive manufacturing efficiency as rapidly as possible. For this purpose, multinational corporations (MNCs) are seen as effective means of advancing technological development and transferring technical capabilities to local personnel and firms. For others, the essence of technological development is that local people master production technology and rapidly deepen their technical contribution through adaptation, development and research. From this point of view, MNCs are seen as displacing indigenous learning and mastery.
