ABSTRACT
In L'Annee litteraire, Freron wrote positive reviews of both Le Magasin des adolescentes and Instructions pour les jeunes dames, commending Jeanne Marie Leprince de Beaumont for continuing the pedagogical mission begun with Le Magasin des enfants in 1756. Leprince attacked the adults in charge with girls' education, reproached them for their irresponsible behaviors, and condemned prevailing lax morals. Freron concluded his 1760 article with an accusation of plagiarism, directed at Marmontel, for not mentioning the English source of the story 'Fidelia' that he had published in the Mercure de France. Although the attack did not target her directly, it resonated negatively at the end of an otherwise positive article. All reviewers of the Magasins agreed on the need for a better female education and, with the exception of Grimm, that gave Leprince credit for her significant contribution to such a worthy cause and admired her pioneering spirit.
