ABSTRACT

Jihadism has a long history in Algeria. This chapter investigates the change and evolution of the jihadist scene in Algeria since the end of the civil war in 2002 onwards. The chapter demonstrates how highly resilient, adaptive, and pragmatic jihadist actors such as Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb are at taking roots in the social fabric of many communities around the region. The chapter tackles also the anti-terrorism policies of the Algerian authorities, assesses their efficiency, and provides a prognosis of the future of jihadism in Algeria.
