ABSTRACT

Words of encouragement can be used to empower individuals through the "bad times" and can be reinstated to celebrate the

occurrence of "good times." From generation to generation, inspirational words have been passed down in the form of common phrases or "sayings." Many of these phrases can be found to have a religious foundation or reference to them. Since mankind still has no rational explanation as to why certain life events occur unexpectantly (i.e., a tornado destroying a longstanding family home or a healthy friend suddenly contracting a terminal disease), there is a need to believe someone or something is in control, socially and/or spiritually. From natural disasters to man-made accidents and from unanticipated job opportunities to casually meeting one's future spouse, life events are an enigma within the life cycle. The uncertainty of these life events often creates a scenario of hope or despair. The former can evolve into a spiritual optimism where there is a sense of personal control; whereas, the latter reflects a pessimistic view of life that results in loss of control, futility and lastly, depression.
