ABSTRACT

Keith Hodgkin contribution to record-keeping in general practice has significantly influenced the way general practi¬tioners document in the medical records of patients. Hodgkin became a general practitioner in 1949 and began this part of his career in Stockton, Durham. In 1952, he moved to Redcar and founded a practice. Even the basic principles are of limited use until the doctor is aware of the different emphasis of his new environment, e.g. the simple guide that common diseases occur most often cannot be applied until he knows the common disorders. In 1953, he realised that record-keeping in general practice was unsatisfactory and that there was a need to document the diagnostic reasons for all the actions they were advising. He also became a visiting professor for Glasgow Medical School, Dundee Medical School and also lectured at the University of Western Australia.
