ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the role of the sport psychologist in working within youth sport environments. Particular attention is given to (a) key considerations associated with service provision with youth athletes using relevant theoretical frameworks as a guide (i.e. Youth Sport Consulting Model; Youth Sport Consultation Triangle), and (b) gaining entry and developing relationships with key stakeholders (e.g. parents and coaches). Additionally, (c) important developmental issues, (d) ethical concerns (i.e. assent/consent, confidentiality, technology use, referrals), and (e) special consultant- and context-related considerations unique to youth sport psychology service provision (i.e. consultant characteristics, fees/payment for services, sport psychology session homework, termination of services) will be addressed. To finish this chapter, we offer best practice guidelines and recommendations based on the available literature and our own extensive experience relating to how to most effectively work with young athletes as an applied practitioner.
