ABSTRACT

Children with fragile X syndrome are first and foremost children. Some will want to be footballers when they grow up, and some will want to be pop stars. Some of them will be brighter than others. They’ll laugh at things they find funny, and cry when hurt. Many girls will be fond of Post-its and other stationery, and many boys will climb trees or do wheelies on their bikes. There will be the typical sex differences, just are there are in children who do not have fragile X. So, on average, the girls will develop more quickly and they’ll do better in school. They will endure puberty and all that it entails. Sooner or later most of them will acquire a fancy for the opposite sex, their chosen suitors sometimes inducing dismay in their parents.
