ABSTRACT
Keystone XL is a pipeline that would run from the Canadian province of Alberta all the way to Texas ports in the Gulf of Mexico. One of the ancillary consequences of the politicization of Keystone XL has been to raise the profile of some of the less known pipelines currently being pursued by companies, such as TransCanada and Enbridge. The Keystone XL soon became Bold Nebraska's main action item, while Bold Nebraska appeared in the national spotlight as perhaps the most active local group opposing the pipeline. Notwithstanding the question of substantive relevance, Keystone XL is undoubtedly a masterstroke in political mobilization and environmental activism. A concrete pipeline project, the destructive nature of oil extraction from tar sands, a scary and powerful opponent, and the wonderful ease of forging local-global connections across America have all conspired to make the work of Keystone XL campaigners easier than is often the case.
