ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the role of instructional technology in formal elementary, secondary and higher education. Four major categories of technology will be included: print technology, which is the most widely used; telecommunications, including radio, telephone, satellite and teleconferencing; audio-visual technologies, including the traditional audio visual and graphics component; and interactive computer technologies, including computer-assisted instruction, intelligent video, and video-disc. The use of simulation and games in education is gaining ground and about 50 per cent of colleges have started to use them. Usually a myriad of problems influences any effort dedicated to solving education problems involving technology; unsolved, they frequently cause promising educational ventures to become skeletons in our educational broom closets. Persons who will ultimately use and benefit from the educational technology must be involved in the planning, execution, and evaluation of an innovation if it is to succeed.
