ABSTRACT
Consultation, like teaching and supervision, is rarely something for which art therapists have formal educational preparation. In the latter, a distinction is usually made between program consultation and case consultation. One of the most critical variables in institutional consultation is an understanding of the system itself. Art therapy consultation activities are often concrete and practical, like teaching folks how to order appropriate supplies, helping to plan and organize art rooms, doing in-service training, and conducting demonstration interviews. Having said that, one of the most hazardous kinds of case consultation for an art therapist lies in the seductive invitation to discourse on someone via their products alone. Of all the possible roles for an art therapist, consultation is probably the one that is most freely chosen by the person asking for assistance, so that the level of motivation and the desire to use what the readers have to offer are generally quite high.
