ABSTRACT
During shift-to-shift hand-over reports on Scottish surgical wards, it is not uncommon to hear nurses say about a patient, ‘He’s better in himself’. This phrase, recorded in field notes during a recent study of excellent, experienced, surgical nurses, was found to point towards the ways in which nurses are attuned to the patients’ experience of illness, recovery and hospitalization.
