ABSTRACT
As noted in Chapter 5, there is an enormous difference between operating a plant by following procedures and operating a plant when you understand and know what is happening. In fact, most experienced operators have a fairly good knowledge of how a plant works and track what is happening in the plant by ‘mental simulation’ and by checking the correspondence between feedback and expectation. In many cases tracking is done instinctively, rather than consciously.
