ABSTRACT

Premising on the viewpoint that social forces play a crucial role in knowledge creation, acquisition and application, this chapter builds up a sociological conceptualization of knowledge. Knowledge, being a social product, is unevenly distributed throughout society, where social norms immensely influence the possession and application criteria of knowledge resources. The chapter concludes by developing on the concept of knowledge capability, which refers to knowledge possession coupled with knowledge-operating capabilities. It is not inert possession of knowledge, rather the knowledge capability of social actors, that has the potential to mitigate the extant knowledge divide which cripples society.
