ABSTRACT

‘Give me a one-handed economist’ is said to be a heartfelt cry by the former American president Harry S. Truman. ‘All my economists say, “On the one hand, on the other … ”’. It wouldn't be entirely out of bounds to apply this statement to the discussion about managers and professionals that is held in many organizations. It is natural to long for a ‘one-handed organization’: the organization in which either the professional is right, or the manager.
