ABSTRACT

This lab consists of five practice problems and covers material on two-sample hypothesis testing (Chapter 8) and nonparametric hypothesis testing (Chapter 9), allowing for an experiential learning experience as users work through clinical and public health problems that lend themselves to the two-sample hypothesis testing (parametric and nonparametric) framework. The lab emphasizes the importance of statistical assumptions for hypothesis testing and choosing the correct statistical test based on study design and data provided. Some problems can be completed by hand, whereas others require the use of statistical software (e.g., Stata, SAS), but all can be checked in statistical software using datasets provided on the website (data are available in both SAS and Stata format). Hand calculation ensures that the readers understand statistical concepts, but the use of statistical software is encouraged to allow readers to become familiar with using a statistical software program to conduct data analysis and to learn how to read output. Emphasis is placed on drawing conclusions in the context of the hypothesis being test.
