Following-on from the Introduction, this first main chapter elaborates on the concept of lamination, explaining it in greater detail. Lamination, I contend, manifests itself in a variety of ways. Using a number of visual examples, the main purpose of this chapter is to showcase each of the instances of lamination that I have identified and that I shall discuss throughout the rest of the book. In addition to this, the chapter discusses lamination as a method of material and conceptual construction. Drawing on cultural studies and other sociological theories of textualities and photography, including W.J.T. Mitchel, Elizabeth Chaplin and Walter Benjamin, the chapter elaborates on the conceptual apparatuses that are crucial to the processes of lamination, on both material and cognitive levels.
