ABSTRACT
During the last 10 years we have seen a great increase in the use of crosslinguistic comparison as a test for universalist hypotheses about language acquisition. Comparing languages gives an indication of the validity of these hypotheses, and also possibly of the validity of the interaction of innate language acquisition mechanisms with other factors.
