ABSTRACT
Theory building in the study of language policy and management (LPM) is still a relatively recent endeavor1, which is why Spolsky (2004, p. ix) can reasonably describe his own work as ‘first efforts at a theory’. I will therefore, for the purpose of this chapter, take his work as the point of departure for rethinking issues in LPM in relation to research in world Englishes.
