ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author shows that the large-group event consists of a series of meetings of all members, together with two or more consultants from the staff. He introduces the large-group event into the conference programme. Its primary task is to study the phenomena of large-group behaviour as they happen. Many devices have been used to increase the participation of members in the events of conferences and training programmes. A large group, for conference purposes, is defined simply as one that is too large for face-to-face relationships. The large group provides a more public occasion, and the greater the number present, the greater the exposure. The large group therefore poses special problems for its members and its leaders. In the large group, because of its size, some members have to sit behind others; hence a speaker can neither see nor be seen by everyone in the group.
